Now and then, we’re going to get down to the details of our project. Like the fact that we’ve reworked the floor plans in our combo units a bit. We’ve added a half bath, additional cabinets in the kitchen and given you some more closet space to store those winter clothes you’ll soon be packing away. If New York had a little brother — it would be Chicago. But if New York had a distant cousin that kind of looked like it from far away, but when you got really close, you were like, “How are you guys related again?” It would be the Crossroads, KC. Part of this big city kinship comes from the NY-style boutiques that line 18th Street and wind around Baltimore. Habitat Shoe Store, Spool, A Forest and new neighbor, Peggy Noland, all bring the latest designers and fashions to Kansas City. Adopting the art scene that surrounds them, these boutiques are a mixture of urban grit, high-end design and without a hint of Suburban strip mall. These forward-thinking entrepreneurs aren’t waiting for trends to migrate from the coasts to the Midwest, they’re going out and bringing them to the Crossroads. Our distant cousin would be so proud.

Recently, Hotwire named Kansas City as the fifth best place to travel for people looking for a good value. If we had friends coming in town this weekend, first, we’d make them help us with a few chores. But when they finished sandblasting our kitchen, we’d show them everything happening in the Crossroads that makes it a tourist attraction even among Kansas Citians. Like the recently renovated Liberty Memorial and World War I Museum. Or maybe we’d take them to The Kansas City Symphony’s performance of, “The Rite of Spring” with Michael Stern. For dining that’s a little different, the Hereford House puts on an interactive murder mystery dinner, “Sax, Violence and All that Jazz!” And we wouldn’t let our guests leave without stopping by the Crossroads recent additions and be-seen hot spots, JP Wine Bar, Nara and Cellar Rat. After all that, if there’s still time to retile the bathroom, that’s fine with us.

Break out your bikini.

On Tuesday we got a teasing peek at spring when the temp sprung up to 57 degrees for a few brief hours. The warm weather got us thinking about swimsuit season, which got us sucking in our stomachs and compulsively doing sit-ups. As we exhaled, we began to imagine what summertime would be like at THE BROADWAY — sitting by the pool, hanging out in the open-air terrace and grilling at the outdoor entertaining space. This little respite was almost enough to cure our winter blahs and make us renew our gym memberships. Until Wednesday morning when we stepped outside, and our newspaper was frozen to our dog.

Candy hearts are perfect for Valentine’s Day — if you’re 11. Assuming you’ve passed the fifth grade and want to impress your significant other with more than high-fructose corn syrup, we’ve got a few ideas to make February 14th unique, memorable and still pretty sweet.

• Art, art and more art — you can’t throw a rock in the Crossroads without hitting a gallery. Please don’t throw a rock. It’ll ruin your date.
